Personal life

The exemplary teacher and Bharat Ratna Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan was born on 5th September 1888 in a poor Brahmin family in Tiruttani village in the rural areas of Tamil Nadu. Father Sarvapalli Veeraswamy was a learned Brahmin scholar by profession and mother Sitamma was a housewife.

He went through childhood, adolescence one by one and in the first part of youth he got married to Shibukamu Devi in ​​1904 AD at the age of 16 and brought up five daughters and one son. The great historian Sarvapalli Gopal was the only son of Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan.


Education life

Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan was a brilliant student from the beginning. After his early education in Tiruttani village, his father admitted him to the Lutheran Christian Mission School in Tirupati, where he studied from 1894 to 1900 and then to a college in Vellore. He then completed his post-graduation in Madras, Madras Christian College. In 1906, he completed his MA in Philosophy, his subject being 'Abstract Preconceptions of Vedanta Philosophy'. Received lifetime scholarship in education field.


Work life

A very bright and quiet student from a poor family through hard work became a teacher of philosophy in Madras Presidency College in 1909, assistant professor of philosophy in 1916. In 1918, he started teaching independently at Mysore University. He later became the Vice-Chancellor of the college from which he obtained his master's degree in Madras. He became the Vice-Chancellor of Benares University. He even received invitations to teach at various universities abroad.

Political life

He started his political career through various programs to achieve independence in the subjugated India. Later, when India gained independence on 15th August 1947, when Jawaharlal Nehru requested Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan to carry out diplomatic work as a special ambassador to the Soviet Union, he accepted the task with self-satisfaction.

He also served as a member of the Constituent Assembly from 1947 to 1949. After his successful academic career, he was also highly praised for his actions and behavior in politics. He made his debut as an active politician in Parliament.

Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan was the first Vice President of the country for 10 years from 13 May 1952 to 13 May 1962, on the eve of the constitution of independent India. At this time, he wanted to make great improvements in the education system. He was then independently elected as the second President of India on 13 May 1962, serving until 13 May 1967.

During his tenure as President, the state had to face a state of instability due to various setbacks such as India's war with China and Pakistan on the one hand, India's defeat by China and the death of two Prime Ministers on the other hand. However, needless to say, during his presidential activities, if his students and friends wanted to celebrate his birthday in a special way, he said that instead of his birthday, teachers' day would be celebrated on September 5, then he would get a special favor.

Award-honor

The ideal educationist, philosopher, political scientist Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan was knighted by the British Government in 1931 AD. He was also nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature five times between 1933-1937 and was also nominated as a Fellow of the British Academy in 1938.
In 1954, he received India's highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna, and in the same year, he received an honorary award from the German Department of Science and Art. In 1961 he received the Peace Prize for the German Book Trade and in 1968 he received the Sahitya Akademi Award.


End of life

Bharatratna Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, a great talent man, passed away on 17th April 1975 due to a heart attack.
