Santal politician Draupadi Murmu has been nominated by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the July 18 presidential election in India.

The 64-year-old former teacher from Odisha has been associated with the BJP for decades. Served as the Governor of Jharkhand State.

If elected, Draupadi will be the first person to represent an indigenous people in India's highest office.

Party president JP Nadda announced the name of the presidential candidate at the end of the BJP's parliamentary board meeting last Tuesday.

He said that Draupadi was chosen as the candidate after a detailed discussion on the 20 names selected by the BJP and its allies.

Draupadi was elected as a member of Odisha Legislative Assembly from Rairangpur constituency in 2000 and 2009 for BJP.

A Santal politician served as a minister in the coalition government of Biju Janata Dal and BJP from 2000 to 2004. Initially, he was given the responsibility of the Ministry of Commerce and Transport, but later he was assigned the responsibility of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock.

From 2006 to 2009, Draupadi Murmu was the president of the BJP's state unit for scheduled communities. In 2015, she quit active politics after being appointed as the first woman governor of Jharkhand, a neighboring state of Odisha.

Draupadi was appointed as the first tribal governor of Odisha. He held that position till July 2021.
