Phoolan Devi: Who Avenged Her Rape

In "Book of Unforgettable Woman" by Khushwant Singh, one of India's most successful writers, while writing about Phoolan Devi, a member of Phoolan Devi's team who was in police custody, said, "Phoolan used to undress in front of us as if we were non-existent. The language used by the other girls was in keeping with girls. But whenever I saw Phoolan, I heard nothing but dirty words from her mouth. Every time she opened her mouth, foul language would come out - 'gandu, motherchod, betichod'."

Born in 1963 in a family of Malla caste, known as the lowest caste in India, Phulan was naturally a burden to her parents as one of five sisters out of six brothers and sisters, then she was raped by ghouls at various times in her life and later became a dacoit. Certainly
not unusual.

In her deposition after the first round of arrest on 6 January 1979, Phoolan Devi said about herself, "We belong to the Malla caste and live in the village of Gurah Ki Purwa. When I was twelve years old I was married off to a forty-five-year-old man named Putti Lal."

\(Book of Unforgettable Women, Khushwant Singh) Phoolan Devi walks away after being married against her will to a man thirty years her senior and unable to endure the husband's forced intercourse and regular torture. Due to the fear of the society, Phul is returned to her husband's house.

The history of Phoolan Devi's inclusion in the bandits is no less eventful. At the age of eighteen, when Phoolan found himself abandoned by everyone, when he realized that his parents no longer wanted him, that his old husband had divorced him, that his second marriage had become worthless, Phoolan felt that he had no choice but to go somewhere far away except to take up prostitution or commit suicide. There is no other way open.

Soon Phoolan met Vikram Singh, a member of the dacoit gang. He also had a physical relationship with Vikram Singh and at one time Vikram wanted to take him into the party, but at first Phoolan refused, but Vikram made him a member of the party. Since then Phoolan became a bandit and later Phoolan fell in love with Vikram Singh. But even then Phoolan is not free from physical torture. Whether he liked it or not, the other members of the group had to enjoy his body as well.

The leader of the party, Babu Gujjar, brutally attacked Phulon. Phoolan could not bear it and told Vikram and Vikram shot and killed Babu Gujja overnight and declared himself the leader of the party, warning everyone in the party not to touch Phoolan.

After that, another turning point in Phulan's life began. Vikram Singh was not actually the leader of the party, Sriram and his brother Lalram of the Tagore sect were. Both were in jail. Bikram Singh bailed them out by spending Rs.80,000. After they arrived in Dubai, they demanded the leadership of the team from Vikram but the rest of the team did not agree. Then Sriram and Lalram both killed Vikram Singh and cleared the path.

They then abducted Dubhai Phulan and brought him to a village in Uttar Pradesh called Behmai, 100 km from Kanpur. Sriram was presented there in front of the whole village almost undressed. He claimed to be the killer of Vikram and was tortured. First Sriram was gang-raped by her brother and then one by one by many members of Tagore's community for about 23 days.

At one point he was left for dead. Phulan somehow managed to survive. Phulan told Mala Sen, the author of Phulan Devi's autobiography, "They wrongfully tortured me."

Behmai is a village in Uttar Pradesh, India. 14 February 1981. A gruesome incident of that day introduced Phoolan Devi to the whole world as "Dasyurani". On that day, Phoolan lined up 22 Thakurs to kill her lover Vikram Singh. This event is infamous in history as the Behmai Massacre or "Behmai Genocide". Phoolan committed the massacre not only to kill her lover, but also as revenge for her gang-rape and a long-spent grudge against the upper Tagore community

Since then the name of Dasyurani Phoolan Devi has become quite popular. It is heard that at that time, the sale of Phulan idols in the guise of Durga started in the cities. Such revenge is not possible for an ordinary woman.

Two years after the incident, Phoolan surrendered under certain conditions in the presence of about 8,000 spectators. Almost all of these conditions were accepted by the police, except that he was sentenced to 11 years in prison instead of 8 years. Fullon was released in 1994. Full political career began.

In 1996, the Samaj Party (SP) selected Phulan for the Mirzapur constituency. Phoolan Devi won the election. Later, in 1998, Phulan lost the by-election but won again in 1999. On July 25, 2001, this brave woman was shot dead by Sher Singh on her way back from Parliament. This is the eventful life story of Dasyurani Phoolan Devi. The period of which is less than thirty eight years.

It's up to you whether you hate Phoolan Devi for her actions as a dasurani or applaud her brave revenge against the rape of a fiery woman born in a low Malla caste who saw the ugliness of life and was raped numerous times in her life. But I salute him.
